Over 135 Years as Atlanta's Primary Animal Charity

pet adoption centerThe AHS is the oldest private charitable organization in Atlanta, founded in 1873 following a visit to the city by Robert E. Lee. The animal charity was originally chartered to protect women, children, and animals and remained a child protection and animal welfare society for 79 years. The Shelter, now a widely recognized pet adoption center, clinic, and educational program provider, was originally located on Marietta Street and moved to its present location at 981 Howell Mill Road in the 1930s. AHS does not euthanize for time or space.

Pet Adoption Center and Much More

The AHS - an Atlanta pet adoption center with a proven track record of helping the city' homeless, abused, and neglected animals - offers many additional public-wide services, including a Canine Play Yard for potential adopters, spaying and neutering, dog training and educational programs, and a veterinary clinic. And, of course, unlike many other animal shelters around the country, the AHS never euthanizes because of space or time constraints. Every service or program at our animal charity is made possible by generous contributions to our many animal welfare charities and yearly fundraisers from the community.
