Volunteer Training*

Without the hard work and dedication of our volunteers, the Society would simply not be. We are always looking for volunteers who are committed, caring, and ready to make a difference in the lives of animals and adopters. By joining our team of dedicated volunteers, you will be helping to place as many adoptable animals as possible into loving homes, educating the public about pet care, and positively impacting the community. If you are over 16 years old (some positions require individuals to be at least 18 years of age), and would like to become a shelter volunteer, please carefully review the details below to understand how to get started as a "Society Pet" volunteer:

Step 1: Attend a Volunteer Training

The first step in becoming an Atlanta Humane Society pet shelter volunteer in any capacity is to attend a mandatory 2.5-hour training session (click here) for more information on the many volunteer opportunities available with the Atlanta Humane Society). During this session, you will learn about the history of the Atlanta Humane Society, our mission, and receive detailed information about the various volunteer opportunities available at the shelter. You will also work with our Animal Behavior & Training Coordinator, who will provide detailed information about handling animals and the general procedures and policies of the AHS.

We do require a donation of $25 (cash or check) at this training to help cover the cost of training supplies (t-shirt, apron, and leash).

REGISTRATION FOR TRAINING IS REQUIRED.  Please see the calendar below for upcoming training sessions:

Step 2: Complete Mentoring Session

Several of the volunteer positions at the Society require new volunteers to participate in one (1) mentor session once the initial volunteer training is completed. The mentor session consists of a 2.5-hour hands-on training session with a more experienced volunteer. Mentor sessions are designed to walk new volunteers through a typical day of volunteering at the shelter and/or out in the community for a pet therapy session so that the principles discussed during training can be practically applied. Further details on signing up for a mentor session will be provided during the initial volunteer training.

*Please note: The volunteer program, training, and opportunities offered through the Atlanta Humane Society apply only to the Atlanta Humane Society locations in Atlanta, Georgia and Alpharetta, GA. We are not affiliated with any other shelters or groups, so their policies may be different.

If after reviewing all of the information regarding the volunteer program at the Atlanta Humane Society, you still have questions or concerns, please contact the following:
