Volunteer Opportunities

Adoption Volunteer
Volunteers are needed to assist staff and the public with appropriate placement of animals, supervise handling of animals by the public, walk dogs, assist in educating the public about pet care, all while giving the animals the love and care they need. Must be at least 16 years of age, have legible handwriting, good communications skills, the ability to think quickly and a desire to work with the public.

Greeter/Shop Assistant Volunteer
Volunteers are needed to assist the public in selection of pet supplies and answer questions the general public may have about adopting. Must be at least 16 years of age (12-15 year olds must be with a parent at all times).

Special Events Volunteer
Volunteers are needed to represent the AHS in a positive light at special events. Volunteers may be required to handle paperwork, directions, set-up and/or clean-up and any other special needs (such as item sales). Must have the ability to meet deadlines and be flexible with job assignments. Must be at least 16 years of age (12-15 year olds must be with a parent at all times).

Hoparound Hound Costume Character
Acts as a positive role model for the AHS at public events. Must be at least 16 years of age, be able to handle crowds effectively and be animated in a bulky costume. Entertaining attitude is essential.

Administrative Assistant Volunteer
Volunteers are needed to assist Volunteer Services, Special Events or Fund Development departments with general office duties, clerical duties, and data entry. Must be at least 16 years of age, and have legible handwriting and recording ability. Computer literacy a plus.

Animal Admission Volunteer
Volunteers are needed to assist AHS intake department in processing animals. This may include bathing animals and/or clerical duties. Must be at least 18 years of age, have general clerical skills, ability to work with the public and assist staff in assigned areas.

PFT (Pet Facilitated Therapy) Volunteer
Volunteers must be able to confidently and comfortably handle animals on visits, follow appropriate PFT guidelines and be able to make a monthly commitment. Looking for volunteers who can relate to geriatric, pediatric, handicapped and emotionally disabled clients, and be able to handle animals on visits. A requirement of 18 years of age with valid drivers license with insurance.

Foster Care Volunteer
Volunteers are needed to care for not-quite-adoptable (too young, too old, unsocialized, or treatably ill) animals' in your home until they can be placed for adoption. Must be at least 18 years of age, and have a home set-up that will facilitate special-needs animals. Home check is required.

Heartbank Volunteer
Looking for volunteers to assist in fundraising endeavors for the Society. Volunteers place collection banks in approved locations and collect and deliver monies from these banks at least once a month to the Shelter during regular business hours or by mail. Must be at least 16 years of age or have adult supervision.
