The Mariel Hannah Humane Heroes Award

The Atlanta Humane Society is pleased to announce the establishment of the Mariel Hannah Humane Heroes Award, an annual award established to honor a Georgia teenager for exemplary service on behalf of animals.

atlanta catA native of metro Atlanta, Mariel Hannah was a lifelong pet lover with a special affinity for homeless animals. Tragically, she was one of four people killed in a home invasion in Forsyth County in March 2006. To honor the 18-year-old's memory, her family and friends have established a fund at the Atlanta Humane Society to recognize selfless acts by teenagers who share Mariel's love for animals.

Nominations for the annual Mariel Hannah Humane Heroes Award will be accepted during the first three months of each year (for services given in the previous year); recipients will be selected each April by a volunteer committee convened for the purpose, and the winner will be announced in early May at the start of Be Kind to Animals Week. Each year's recipients will receive a cash prize and a plaque of recognition. A second plaque will be on permanent display at Atlanta Humane Society.

2010 Mariel Hannah Humane Heroes Award rules

Nominate a child between the ages of 13 and 18 who performed an extraordinary act of kindness for the benefit of animals. Briefly describe (under 200 words) of how this child has shown extraordinary kindness to animals and why he/she should be selected as the 2010 Mariel Hannah Humane Heroes Award winner.

Mail your nomination to: Education Department, Atlanta Humane Society, 981 Howell Mill Road NW, Atlanta, GA 30318. All nomination materials must be postmarked by April 1st, 2010 to be eligible. Each nomination will be judged on commitment to animal welfare, and the originality and scope of the project. Winners will be acknowledged by mail and at our annual Be Kind to Animals Week Student Art Contest Awards Ceremony in May.
