"Be Kind To Animals" Art Contest in Memory of Jonathan Edward Ratner

Jon was a consumate animal and art lover who always had a soft spot for four legged creatures large and small. He was a consistent supporter of the Atlanta Humane Society, adopting his first cat there while he was still in college. He went on to adopt three more Humane Society pets over the years. He was a firm believer that animals should be treated with upmost care and he instilled a strong love for animals in his children as well.

The contest is open to kids in Kindergarten through 12th grade, and it's a great way to use your talent to promote "Be Kind to Animals Week (the first full week of May every year)! All entries are due at the AHS by March 31.

What does Being Kind to Animals mean to you? Draw a picture about it, and you could win!

You could earn cash and other goodies, and do something good for animals at the same time!

  • Teachers, we may be able to pick up from your school if you have 30 entries or more; call 404.974.2899 to find out more. You must call by March 20.
  • Entries must be 18 inches by 24 inches ONLY, and not mounted. Please read official rules for details!
  • Original work ONLY!
  • Don't forget to tape your filled-out entry form to the back of your picture!
  • Prizes are awarded in six categories: Kindergarten--2nd grade; 3rd-4th grade; 5th-6th grade; 7th-8th grade; 9th-10th grade; and 11th-12th grade. Each category will have 10 finalists: 1 Grand Prize Winner, a Runner-up Winner, and 8 Honorable mentions. Grand prize is $100 cash; Runner-up receives $50 cash. All finalists receive goody bags and certificates.
  • Winners (with family and friends) are invited to a special awards ceremony here at the AHS to commemorate their achievements!
  • Start working on your entry now!

Entries may be dropped off at the AHS any time during Shelter hours, January - March 31st. Directions and hours here.

NOTE: 18 x 24 pre-cut paper can be found at many art stores or online.

Teachers/Group Leaders

Buy paper in bulk and save! Buy bulk packs of 24 X 36 size, and cut them in half (shortways) to double your sheet count!

Tips: Newsprint paper is inexpensive and comes in 18 x 24 and 24 x 36 sizes, usually in a bound booklet. Newsprint is thin and smooth and works fine for charcoal and crayon. This is a great option for younger artists. (Slightly rougher newsprint is also available.)

For older and more experienced artists and those who want to use pastels, watercolors, or markers, use thicker paper (55lb, 80lb or 100lb). It is available singly or in booklets.

Standard poster board (white or buff only) is fine for entries; however, it is usually larger than the required size, so cut it down before drawing.

Tips for creating winning pictures

Please call the AHS Education Department with any questions at 404.974.2899, or email us at education@atlantahumane.org
