Home | Help save more lives like Heidi’s!
Heidi was suffering at a hoarder’s house…
I know it’s hard to imagine. You and I would like to think a horrible case of animal hoarding could not happen so close to a great city like Atlanta.
But it has. Just 30 miles to the west, one man had amassed nearly 50 dogs he sincerely believed he could care for.
Despite his good intentions, many of his dogs suffered from mange and wounds. Thankfully, the Atlanta Humane Society was contacted by Animal Planet, and made aware of the situation.
Some of the mange was so advanced, you could see patches of skin on some of the animals likes Heidi. Their once-beautiful coats looked as though they had been through a ringer. Thin and gaunt, every animal at this site was facing a situation that could only end in a real tragedy.
As someone who loves our animal friends deeply, if you saw this sort of suffering taking place, you would have done anything in your power to stop it. You would have had to act. But this suffering was taking place in silence — until we got the call.
Before I tell you more about this dramatic rescue, first let me tell you about the Atlanta Humane Society. Did you know we are the oldest private charitable organization in Atlanta, founded in 1873? Or that we have been Atlanta’s primary animal charity for almost 140 years?
As a safe haven, we do not euthanize any of our animals for time or space. The lives we save are put up for adoption, and welcomed back into a caring community. Most importantly, we owe every life saved to the steadfast support of our wonderful friends who give to us so generously. In fact, private contributions are the sole source of support for the critical work we perform.
Today, I’m asking you to join with us, and send your first Atlanta Humane Society gift of $15, $25, $50 — or perhaps even more if you possibly can in this difficult economy.
I can assure you, your gift will be put to work immediately in support of our programs that really do save lives. Take our Humane Emergency Animal Rescue Team (H.E.A.R.T.) program. Created in 2009, it’s able to respond quickly to animal crises like Heidi’s precisely because it’s a mobile unit. The H.E.A.R.T team is ready to roll to save lives in our City, our County — or even across State lines.
When we got to Heidi’s home, we immediately began placing the nearly 50 dogs in our vehicle, and getting them proper medical care. Despite all the activity, Heidi’s bubbly personality shone through.
Bright and cheery, she looked as though she were supervising the whole operation. When it came time for Heidi to get on the rescue vehicle, it was difficult for her owner to let her go because he loved her so much. But he realized he could no longer care for her, and allowed Heidi to come with us.
Right away, Heidi began stealing hearts! Despite undergoing extensive medical treatments for advanced mange, Heidi’s warm spirit helped her foster mom fall in love with her. And when Heidi was ready for a permanent home, her foster mother’s friend fell in love with her as quickly as the rest of us and adopted her!
Today Heidi sports a beautiful black and white coat. She rides to work every day with her new mom, who can’t help but spoil her. Heidi is finally living the pampered life she so richly deserves.
As a new friend of the Atlanta Humane Society, you should know that many more stories like Heidi’s are possible every day. Through your friendship and support, you can help us save more animal lives through rescues, and bring more love into human lives through more pet adoptions.
You’ll also help us treat more animals in our charitable veterinary clinic, offer more low cost spay/neuter services to the Atlanta community — and so much more.
Why do we need your help so urgently? Our resources are constantly pushed past capacity. Plus, we do not receive federal or local government funding nor do we receive money from national animal groups.
So as you consider an amount to give today, please be generous. There are so many more “Heidi’s” who need just a little care to share a lot of love. Thank you, and welcome!
With hope we can do more,

William Shaheen
President
P.S. Please join with us, and donate your first Atlanta Humane Society gift today! Your gift of $15, $25, $50 or more will help save more animal lives, and bring more love into human lives. It’s a great way to share your love, and make a real difference, all year long!
