"What Crisis"
It's 8am at Atlanta Humane Society. The staff has arrived and the dogs and
cats are ready for their walks, housecleaning,
and feeding. Many animals
are readied for surgery, wellness checks,
and we have the community lining up to
bring us unwanted, stray and needy animals.
Our temporary residents are working their "take
me home" expressions so that when potential
new parents come by, they can give them that
perfect look.
None of the animals realize there is a recession,
a housing crisis, credit concerns, bank
failures or that we will have a new president
soon taking office.
We realize these concerns and sometimes
they even cause us to stop in our tracks and
question our decisions. We worry about the
economy and the ability of potential adopters
to keep helping us save lives of loving animals.
We worry about our wonderful and compassionate
donors: will they keep giving money so
that we can care for even more animals…?
Times are very challenging with everything
going on in the world. We, however, must not
let any of these external actors deter our focus
of saving lives of animals. The animals don't
know there is a crisis and, as it has been said,
"this too shall pass."
The dogs and cats really bring what is
important back into focus - caring for friends
and family, living a good life, and helping
others.
When we will look back at this crisis, we will
observe the only thing we have lost is money,
not life or spirit. So, let's heed the advice of
our furry companions and worry only about the
necessities and give plenty of love.
As long as there are animals in need, Atlanta
Humane Society will not lose its focus of saving
the lives of as many animals as we can with
our staff, resources and communities help.
As one of our mature cats just told me, "don't
worry, be happy." He was just adopted and
went on with his life with a big smile on his face.
Enthusiastically,

Carl Leveridge
President
Atlanta Humane Society
