Atlanta Humane Society Partners with Animal Planet to Rescue 24 Cats from a Hoarding Situation!

Atlanta (December 7, 2010) Atlanta Humane Society is pleased to announce that it has completed its third successful rescue mission with Animal Planet.  On November 29, 2010 Atlanta Humane Society rescued 24 cats from a hoarding situation.  The cats, ages 3 months to 2 ½ years, were voluntarily given up by their owners and brought back to Atlanta Humane Society where they will be evaluated and placed for adoption when deemed medically ready.

“We are thrilled to partner with Animal Planet to save animals from desperate situations that can affect their health and physical safety,” says AHS President Carl Leveridge, “we hope to continue this partnership so we can save even more animals in our community.”

Animal hoarding is defined as a compulsive need to possess and control animals, without having the ability to properly house or care for them, while at the same time denying this inability.  As the hoarder takes in more animals, the situation spirals out of control.  The consequences for the animals include overcrowding, malnourishment and neglect, which can have a lasting impact on their behavior.

Look for this story to air on Confessions:  Animal Hoarding, sometime in February, 2011.

Atlanta Humane Society is open seven days a week, from 11 AM – 7 PM Monday through Friday and 10 AM – 6 PM Saturdays and Sundays.  Atlanta Humane Society is located at 981 Howell Mill Rd., Atlanta, GA  30318
