Atlanta Humane Society Announces Mariel Hannah Humane Heroes Award Winner For 2007

Atlanta, GA, April 15, 2007. The Atlanta Humane Society is pleased to announce the winner of the inaugural Mariel Hannah Humane Heroes Award, an annual award established to honor a Georgia teenager for exemplary service on behalf of animals.

A native of metro Atlanta, Mariel Hannah was a lifelong pet lover with a special affinity for homeless animals. Tragically, she was one of four people killed in a home invasion in Forsyth County in March 2006. To honor the 18-year-olds memory, her family and friends have established a fund at the Atlanta Humane Society to recognize selfless acts by teenagers who share Mariels love for animals.

Atlanta teenager Anna Harney, a student at the Howard School, was chosen as this years recipient. Anna, who is a gifted photographer, created an art sale called Art From the Heart several years ago, with proceeds benefiting the Atlanta Humane Society. She recruits local artists to come and sell their wares at this summertime event, which includes paintings, jewelry, clothes, photography, and more. The proceeds from Annas sale in 2006 were nearly double the year before.

Anna puts a lot of hard work and dedication into her sale. She has put her artistic talents to excellent use, and has come through with thousands of dollars for the animals. The Atlanta Humane Society is proud to honor her with this award.

Founded in 1873, the Atlanta Humane Society and Society For Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals, Inc. is the oldest private non-profit animal welfare organization in Atlanta and one of the oldest humane agencies in America. Services such as Canine Play Yard, spay/neuter, adoptions, a regional food bank program, dog training, pet facilitated therapy, animal behavior hot-line and our charitable veterinary Clinic are made possible by generous contributions of time and money from the public.

Our mission is to prevent neglect, abuse, cruelty and exploitation of animals and to assure that their interests and well being are fully, effectively and humanely protected by an aware and caring society. For more information on the Atlanta Humane Society, call 404-875-5331.
