Atlanta Humane Society Announces New Award to Recognize
Selfless Service to Animals by a Georgia Teenager
ATLANTA, Georgia --- The Atlanta Humane Society is pleased to announce the establishment of the Mariel Hannah Humane Heroes Award, an annual award established to honor a Georgia teenager for exemplary service on behalf of animals.
A native of metro Atlanta, Mariel Hannah was a lifelong pet lover with a special affinity for homeless animals. Tragically, she was one of four people killed in a home invasion in Forsyth County in March 2006. To honor the 18-year-olds memory, her family and friends have established a fund at the Atlanta Humane Society to recognize selfless acts by teenagers who share Mariels love for animals.
Nominations for the annual Mariel Hannah Humane Heroes Award will be accepted during the first three months of each year; recipients will be selected each April by a volunteer committee convened for the purpose, and the winner will be announced in early May at the start of Be Kind to Animals Week. Each years recipients will receive a cash prize and a plaque of recognition. A second plaque will be on permanent display at Atlanta Humane Society headquarters.
