August 1 - October 31

ASPCA $100K Challenge - Saving More Lives

Atlanta Humane Society is thrilled to be competing in the ASPCA 100K Challenge. We have been named as one of 50 shelters competing for the grand prize, a $100,000 grant. The challenge is to adopt out more pets this year in the months of August, September and October than during those same months in 2009. The grant would go a long way toward providing support for pets in need and that is why we are planning events and promotions to raise adoption numbers. Here is a bit of what you can expect during the next three months:
  • Two-Purr-One
  • Sponsored Pets Program
  • Mobile Adoptions at the Mall
  • Pets in the Park
  • SweetWater Drinking Buddy
  • Reduced Adoption Rates
  • Treats for Adopters
  • Fur Fest
  • Join the Club

Pets in the Park

This fall, three of Atlanta’s most recognized names: SweetWater Brewery, Park Tavern, and Atlanta Humane Society are joining forces to match homeless pets with new, loving families. Every Saturday from August 14 – September 11, Atlanta Humane Society will set up their mobile adoption bus at Park Tavern, on the corner of Piedmont Park. The bus will house plenty of dogs and cats, puppies and kittens for visitors to meet, play with, and adopt! Every person that visits the mobile bus and spends time with an animal of their choice will receive two free tour passes to SweetWater Brewery. The passes may be used on any Saturday tour. Those who do adopt will receive a special gift, in addition to their new family member! Park Tavern will open early to accommodate guests. While you’re visiting the mobile adoption bus, be sure to also check out Piedmont Park’s newly renovated Dog Park as well as the Park’s Green Market!

Atlanta Radio Theatre Company presents
The Island of Dr. Moreau

Atlanta Humane Society is proud to be a "partner in imagination" with Atlanta Radio Theatre Company this Halloween! Join ARTC for a live audio performance of The Island of Dr. Moreau by H. G. Wells. Wells is perhaps best known for his groundbreaking science fiction (The Time Machine) and social commentary (The Shape of Things to Come), but his place in horror fiction is assured by the novella The Island of Doctor Moreau. Moreau, misunderstood and hounded by the London medical community, retreats to a Pacific island to continue his experiments. The goal: Nothing less than to surgically rebuild animals into the shape of men – and to teach them the meaning of humanity. Wells' classic shocker raises the question of what it means to be human. ARTC chose Atlanta Humane Society as the beneficiary for this performance and will donate 25% of all ticket sales to the Society pets in need. Tickets are $10.

For more information, visit www.artc.org.

When: Friday, October 23 @ 8pm

Saturday, October 24 @ 2:30pm

peace love paws book

Peace. Love. Paws. Bookpeace love paws buy now

When the Atlanta Humane Society began our Be Kind to Animals art contest, we were expecting a barrage of paintings and drawings depicting cats and dogs - maybe a few rabbits here and there. But when hedgehogs and lemurs began appearing, we knew this was not going to be your garden-variety art contest!

For nearly 30 years, the Atlanta Humane Society has been inviting children throughout metropolitan Atlanta to enter their Be Kind to Animals art contest and each year we're amused by the variety of animals that show up. What was once primarily a delightful assortment of brightly colored cats and dogs has now become a kaleidoscope of animals, from camels and crabs to peacocks and penguins. Some bring a whisper, some a warning, but all of the messages in this artful anthology are filled with love and hope, inspiring all of us to widen our circle of compassion to include all beings.

Peace. Love. Paws. The Art of Being Kind benefits the work of the Atlanta Humane Society and can be a reminder to all of us that there is no greater art than the art of being kind.

Limited supply hardcover, 144 pages: $29.95. Available for purchase online or www.hermeshousepress.com or call 404.875.5331.
