Poonjab's Story
Dear Atlanta Humane Society,
I adopted Miss Poonjab in May 1998. She was only 8 weeks old and found walking around Lenox Road; yes, she was a runner! She had big, fat paws and a big belly to match (it was swollen because she had just been dewormed). I held her in one hand and laughed when y'all told me she would be 60-70lbs. Y'all were wrong...she topped out around 78lbs.
All my dogs have come from AHS, and I never thought any dog could replace my childhood dog, Tweeny; Poonjab did it with flying colors! She was super smart. I could name a toy and she would go get that toy. She was house trained in 2 weeks, and when she started going deaf around age 11 she learned hand signals for everything within 3 months. She knew where all the treats in the house were kept, she loved going for rides, and loved her big backyard. When the moon was full she liked to go out, sit, and look up at the moon. I lived in Florida for 4 years, and she loved the beach–she loved to bite the waves as they rolled in. She was fascinated by Christmas lights. I took her to Callway every year for the Christmas lights and she loved it! (the leaping frog was here favorite) She got to be December 2010 on the AHS 2011 calander. She stopped a man from entering my house in 2003. She was very protective. She was a pit/terrier/boxer mix…a powerful breed that needs a strong loving lead. If you give them a job/task to perform they are good to go. The breed is not bad, but some owners are. Don’t be afraid of the bull breeds-they are great with kids and good protectors. When I was sick with Lyme she never left my side. She was one in a million!
I write this with tears. They are tears of sadness because I put her down today at the ripe old age of 13. And they are tears of joy because God blessed me by allowing her in my life for over 13 years. I loved her, and I miss her already. I used to love to shake her belly and say, “You get all this for $63.50!” (that was her AHS adoption fee) She got all her shots at AHS, she was spayed at AHS, and my next baby will come from AHS as well. I’ve been to many shelters in my life, and I’ve never seen any that come close to AHS.
Thank you!
Gabriel
